Pat Cummins has claimed 309 wickets in 71 appearances with an impressive average.
The Australian selection chief George Bailey has confirmed that skipper Cummins will be a central figure in the forthcoming historic rivalry.
There were concerns that the veteran bowler might be unavailable due to a ongoing back issue that had not yet healed.
Previous updates from team management suggested no final decision had been made regarding whether he would play, with the extended contest kicking off on the 21st of November in Perth.
Bailey expressed that Cummins is "building up" and was "optimistic" about the likelihood of participating.
"We're aware that the window is narrowing and various factors around that, not only his injury, but further aspects," Bailey remarked.
"It's positive. We firmly believe that he will feature a significant role. Ideally from the opening match. Otherwise, we'll adjust."
Injury History
He was sidelined Australia's limited-overs series against New Zealand and India recently after scans revealed a stress reaction in his back.
He has a history of back injuries, with flare-ups in multiple past seasons leading to absences from multiple domestic campaigns in a short span.
Cummins stated he would be proactive in his approach in his recovery plan to make the squad for the series.
He mentioned that it was unclear if the captain had resumed bowling as part of his recovery but conceded it was "pressing" for him to recover fully for the initial match.
Alternative Arrangements
In case of absence, ex-skipper Smith will assume leadership.
Versatile player Green was excluded lately from Australia's squad for their one-day international series against the Asian giants as a preventive step because of soreness in his side.
The selector characterized it as a "small issue and confirmed that he'll feature in the domestic first-class competition, so will be "well-prepared to resume bowling."
"Considerable effort has gone into building out the plan for him to participate for the initial game as an dual-role player," Bailey explained.
"Originally, he'd only feature in the first two ODIs regardless. His aggressive style the cricket bat in white-ball cricket, if it causes any delay for 24 more hours, we opted to approach this more conservatively."
