Wimbledon Embraces Video Review Technology for the First Time.

Wimbledon court with video review technology

The tournament joins the US and Australian Opens in employing replay technology.

Video review systems are set to arrive at The Championships this year.

Players will gain the option to question specific decisions from the official, mirroring the system currently in place at each of the US Open and the Australian Open.

The new system is slated for use on the main stadium and the number one court for the duration of the tournament and on the remaining featured courts when they are staging singles matches.

This step comes just a season following the All England Club introduced ELC, which terminated the centuries-old tradition of line judges.

Scope of Challenges

Players cannot to challenge the accuracy of the electronic line calling, but are allowed to ask for the official to review other decisions, including:

  • If a ball has double-bounced.
  • If a ball touched an opponent's racquet or body during play.
  • Possible interference end of a rally.

Importantly, there will be an unlimited number on the number of challenges a player can request.

Practical Application

A recent case occurred in Indian Wells last week, where a top player used the video challenge against his opponent.

The British player conceded it was a tough call for the umpire, but thought his rival had "played the rules effectively."

Official Aurelie Tourte watched a video and determined Draper was guilty of hindrance, awarding the rally to his opponent.

Growing Trend

This technology aren't new for Grand Slams. The system was adopted at the American major for two years and the Australian Open since 2025.

Additionally, it is becoming more common on the women’s WTA Tour, and by the coming year the men's ATP Tour will have video reviews in place at all of its tournaments.

Further Updates

Another innovation at Wimbledon this year involves the introduction of visual indicators on scoreboards to complement the audio calls from the ELC system.

This solves instances where the crowd have sometimes been uncertain if a ball was out or in.

In other news, with precisely a century of days remaining until the start of the tournament, organizers have also revealed an increase in daily capacity at the qualifying competition in the qualifying venue.
